A Writer’s Journey:

Writing a book is an emotional rollercoaster. As an author, I have experienced this tumultuous ride. As a publisher, I have observed writers on this journey and supported them through it.

In the beginning, there’s excitement—a spark of inspiration, a drive that doesn’t let you sleep, making you feel everything is possible. But then the hard work, the climb starts, bringing with it a mix of emotions, which is a familiar part of the writing process for authors.

For me, this is where self-doubt crept in.

Overcoming self-doubt in writing became a key challenge, manifesting in fears like:

  • Fear that my ideas didn’t matter.
  • Fear that I wasn’t enough.
  • Fear that I’d lost my way, jumbled up in the many different ideas that crowded inside my head.

Every writer has their own way of addressing this block. What did I do? I stepped away, let myself feel the silence, and came back to write. Not to impress, but to release.

There is a simple 3-step process I follow:

Write, Reflect, Realign.

Here’s how it works:

#1 – Write:

Pour out everything you want to say on paper. The first draft. The act of putting all your thoughts as words on paper unlocks your subconscious and frees your mind by getting all the clutter out so you can focus. This is where the real creative writing techniques begin to flow.

  • It doesn’t need to be perfect.
  • It just needs to be honest.
  • Let the words flow without judgment.

#2 – Reflect:

After the first ‘everything out’ draft is on paper, take a step back. This is where a fear of judgment or failure may surface, but this stage isn’t about criticism—it’s about self-reflection, an essential part of the writing journey tips.

  • Analyze the words and the emotions they represent.
  • Ask why certain patterns emerged.
  • Identify what’s personal and what’s universal.

#3 – Realign:

With understanding comes power. This step ensures that every word and idea serves the story’s higher purpose.

  • Realign your narrative with your purpose.
  • What story are you truly trying to tell?
  • How does your emotional journey connect with your reader?

When you are learning how to write a book, the hardest part is trusting yourself, trusting that the right words will flow and reach your audience. But by working through these steps, you give yourself the best chance of success.

The writing journey always brings joy, even euphoria, and brings you one step closer to making a positive impact.

P.S. What do you need to let go of to trust your story?
